How to become a child of God

In John 3:1-8, Jesus refers to a specific personal experience by which one can become a child of God.

All of us are born into this world through our natural parents, but that does not make us children of God.

We become children of God when we are 'born again' by the Holy Spirit. This spiritual rebirth imparts to us a totally new kind of life from above, the life of God himself.

Jesus makes it abundantly clear that the Kingdom of God is closed to anyone who is not born again. The new birth is the primary requirement for seeing and entering God’s kingdom.

So, how can a person receive this experience of the new birth?

Each individual must repent of their sins and receive Christ by faith as Saviour and Lord. In this way, one is 'born of God' and becomes a child of God. (John 1:11-13)

According to 1 John 5:10-13, every believer who has submitted to the Lordship of Christ has the inner witness of God that he/she has eternal life. Romans 8:16 states that after this, the Holy Spirit continually bears witness with our spirits that we are the children of God.

The Bible says Jesus stands at the door of your heart seeking entrance (Revelation 3:20). If you let Him in, you would have made the best decision any human being you could possibly make.

If you have made the decision to follow Jesus, there are three things that we would encourage you to do:

  • Tell someone about the decision you have made
  • Begin to read the Bible
  • Find a church to connect with
